Assessments will include: active participation in lectures & design studios (10%), a portfolio design project (10%), coding assignments and viva voce code explanations (10%), and three exams (two midterms & one final: 60%). All deadlines are given in PT.
Attending lectures, and participating in discussions and activities, will help you learn more than the readings alone. But I recognize that “life happens”, so you can earn full credit without attending every single class. You should attend at least 12 lectures and 6 studios for full credit. Attendance will be measured using a Google form, so please bring a device (phone, tablet, laptop, watch?, smart glasses???) you can use to respond. There are no podcasts/recordings of lectures, so please find a friend to share their notes if you miss class.
During the studio each week, you will present your progress on your portfolio project and receive feedback from your peers. The steps of the critique will be:
1) Listen: Students will present their own work briefly. Other students should listen attentively: no phones, no working on your own project.
2) Ask questions: Students should ask any questions they have about the work or the process. Examples: what inspired you? How did you accomplish X? What is your goal with element Y? Etc.
3) Offer feedback/suggestions: Should have a reason/rationale. No personal attacks. If you provide negative feedback, you must provide a constructive suggestion. I like it because… You could improve by…
As a general rule, you should expect to contribute at least 3 times to the discussion each studio. If active participation becomes an issue, we will count number of times each student participates.
You should attend at least 6 studios for full credit. That means, you may miss two studios without contacting us, without penalty. After that, each missed studio attendance will reduce your total participation grade by 20%. To request an excused absence after your initial 2 “freebies”, contact both me and your studio TA on Canvas. You should expect to provide some form of documentation about why you’re missing additional studios.
The portfolio project is an individual project you will work on over the quarter. By the end of the quarter, you will have produced an entry for your design portfolio. If you are applying for design jobs, this could be very useful for your applications and interviews!
Each week will include check ins along the way to your final portfolio entry. Each week’s design assignment is matched to that week’s topic (including readings and lectures), so they will help you understand and apply the concepts we talk about in class. They will also build cumulatively over the course of the quarter until you have a finished design.
Studios will be used to share your current plans & designs, so the assignment should be completed before your studio starts.

You will develop a plan for conducting a needfinding study. Note, next week you will conduct the needfinding, so keep that in mind!
You will conduct observations and analyze your findings.
You will sketch possible solutions for the needs you identified.
You create an architecture diagram and low-fidelity prototype.

Coding labs will help you practice your web development skills. Everyone may use LLMs for coding, however, all students will complete multiple viva voce evaluations, where you will be asked to explain your code and provide rationales for decisions you made in a meeting with either the instructor or a TA. Please make sure you understand the code you submit!

There will be three exams this quarter (two midterms, one final).
All exams for this course will be administered by the Triton Testing Center (TTC) in the Computer-Based Testing Lab in AP&M B349. The TTC’s rules concerning testing are the rules for this course.
You must schedule your tests in advance, and it is recommended that you do so as soon as possible. Scheduling for all tests, with the exception of finals, opens on the first day of instruction.
